Over the years, cake smash photo sessions have become a really fun way to celebrate a baby's first birthday. The more sessions I have been a part of, the more I have learned and am happy to be able to better prepare clients. I wanted to share some tips when planning your baby's cake smash session...
When choosing baby's outfit for their cake smash photos, keep in mind that they WILL get messy. If you don't want it dirty, don't bring it. Bring a dressy outfit to capture baby without the cake, and a fun casual outfit or special birthday outfit for the cake smash.
Now, let's talk about the cake... If your photographer doesn't provide the cake, seek out local bakeries who make smash cakes, or small individual cakes. You can absolutely use a full sized cake, but why waste? Request light color icing.Avoid black, dark blue, and dark green icings. If the icing is heavily saturated, it will temporarily dye baby's skin (we learned this one the hard way!) Don't forget a cake topper or candle!
If your baby has never experienced cake, (or sweets for that matter) don't be upset if they HATE the cake. This happens. But it doesn't mean we can't still get messy :)
The clean up. Okay, listen up, this one is important. If you are shooting at an outdoor location and do not have access to a sink or bathtub, come prepared. Bring a bath towel, paper towels, baby wipes, and a change of clothes for baby, and yourself- haha.
